Substations, Grid Connections, and Data Centers

Energineering specialises in the comprehensive delivery of substations and grid connections. We have strong expertise in building critical infrastructure and manage projects from initial design and dimensioning through to final commissioning. We deliver both new substations as well as refurbishments and extensions that extend the lifecycle of existing facilities.

We serve a wide range of customers, including network operators, renewable energy producers, and industrial companies. Our expertise also covers demanding data centre connections and industrial power distribution solutions. We operate flexibly either as an EPC contractor (turnkey projects) or as a reliable partner, always ensuring a technically and economically optimal and safe end result.

  • Turnkey delivery of a new substation in Tuusula, including construction, five 110 kV bays, extension of an ABB double-bus medium-voltage switchgear, compensation equipment, protection of 110 kV lines and the main transformer, and remote control. We acted as the EPC contractor for this project.

  • Pori Energia Sähköverkot Oy is upgrading the Vähärauma substation. We are acting as the EPC contractor for this project. The substation will be completed in February 2027 and will have a total area of over 600 m². This marks our third consecutive year and project for Pori Energia Sähköverkot.

  • Turnkey delivery of a new substation in Säkylä, including construction, a cable basement, piling works, medium-voltage switchgear, compensation equipment, a reactor, and remote control. We acted as the EPC contractor for this project.

  • Turnkey delivery of a new substation in Sodankylä, including construction, a cable basement, ABB medium-voltage switchgear, compensation equipment, protection for 110 kV lines and the main transformer, and a MicroSCADA control room application. We acted as the EPC contractor for this project. Note: short delivery time.

  • 110 kV substation design and protection. We acted as the contractor for engineering design, protection systems, remote control, control panels, and the switchgear building.

  • We delivered Caruna’s 110 kV Permantokoski substation as the EPC contractor. The substation transmits renewable energy from a hydropower plant. For this reason, the construction schedule was subject to strict requirements. The project was completed on schedule. In addition, we carried out a separate project to upgrade the protection systems of the power plant for Kemijoki Oy.

  • We delivered Caruna’s 220 kV Seitakorva substation as the EPC contractor. The substation transmits renewable energy from the Seitakorva hydropower plant, one of the largest in Finland. For this reason, the construction schedule was subject to strict requirements. During the project, we were able to shorten the schedule by more than 30%.

    Compared to a conventional 110 kV substation, everything at a 220 kV facility is significantly larger in scale. In addition, we carried out a separate project to upgrade the protection systems of the power plant for Kemijoki Oy.

INTELLIGENT AND SELF-HEALING POWER GRID

Secondary Substations and Distribution Automation

In response to market needs, we have developed our own EG product family, specifically designed for the monitoring and control of secondary substations and switching stations in power distribution networks. Our technology enables automatic fault isolation and rapid restoration of the network, improving the quality of power distribution.

The intelligent algorithms of the EG5000 system can accurately indicate fault locations even in challenging earth fault scenarios. Real-time monitoring and predictive maintenance provide network operators with full control over the distribution network, enabling a modern and scalable level of automation. Our solutions are easily upgradable and remotely manageable, ensuring a long lifecycle for the investment.

  • 110/45/20 kV substation design and protection. We acted as the contractor for the design, protection, testing, commissioning, remote control, and control panels for Kajave’s Lohtaja substation, featuring a 32-bay double-bus switchgear.

Medium-Voltage Switchgear and Protection Relay Upgrades

We provide expert services for the lifecycle management of medium-voltage switchgear, from design to testing. Our core expertise includes switchgear replacements, extensions, and refurbishments, where we modernise systems in a cost-effective manner without the need to replace the entire infrastructure. We ensure seamless compatibility between new components and existing equipment and software.

Modernisation and configuration of protection relays are a critical part of power system safety. As a vendor-independent provider, we have expertise in protection relays from all major manufacturers, including ABB, Hitachi, Siemens, Schneider, and Arcteq. We carry out precise protection settings and selectivity studies to ensure system reliability and minimise damage in the event of faults.

Solar Farms, Wind Farms, and BESS (Battery Energy Storage Systems)

We provide expert services for renewable energy projects. We ensure the reliable connection of solar and wind farms, as well as BESS (Battery Energy Storage Systems), to the national grid, covering both remote control and SCADA monitoring systems. We also integrate modern BESS solutions into the energy system, enabling efficient operation of generation assets and effective management of balancing power.

We ensure the safe commissioning and operation of energy parks through comprehensive testing and commissioning services. We utilise advanced testing equipment to verify system performance. Our expertise ensures that renewable energy generation units and energy storage solutions operate seamlessly and meet all technical requirements set by network operators.

  • Commissioning and Periodic Testing

  • We delivered the protection, remote control, and secondary systems package for the grid connection of the Storbötet wind farm as the EPC contractor. The substation transmits renewable energy from the wind farm. Despite a short implementation schedule, the project was completed on time. In addition, we constructed the foundations and cabling for a SCADA container for Vestas.
